XLCS Designs Single-Piece Cage for Blackmagic PYXIS 6K Released https://www.cined.com/xlcs-designs-single-piece-cage-for-blackmagic-pyxis-6k-released/ https://www.cined.com/xlcs-designs-single-piece-cage-for-blackmagic-pyxis-6k-released/#respond Mon, 28 Oct 2024 14:52:37 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=359802 One of the hottest new cameras to be released this year at NAB 2024 was the Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K – a long-awaited “box” style camera hearkening back to Blackmagic Design’s roots. The impressive camera boasts a full-frame sensor, 6K resolution, and incredible dynamic range- but limited attachment points for accessories that you’re sure to want. Seeing a problem, XLCS Designs now offers a pretty cool solution, in what they call the “Full Metal Jacket.” Let’s see what sets this cage apart from others on the market.

For those who want more freedom

As mentioned above, Blackmagic Design created the PYXIS camera with limited flexibility in terms of accessory mounting points. The desire of the Australian-based company would be for the owner to invest in BMD accessories such as the URSA Cine Handle, PYXIS Monitor, and URSA Cine EVF (Electronic View Finder), just to name a few.

Built specifically for the L-Mount Blackmagic PYXIS 6K, XLCS Designs’ new cage brings 300+ threaded mounting holes, NATO rails, a rosette mount, cold shoes, and 15mm rod support points. The single-piece machined aluminum build protects against drops or knocks from gear like C-stands while keeping all ports accessible and compatible with BMD accessories. This setup allows comprehensive customization options without sacrificing cable access or accessory compatibility. It’s a thing of beauty for those who value their $3k purchase.

XLCS Full Metal Jacket for Blackmagic Design Pyxis 6K

Here are some specs on the XLCS Full Metal Jacket:

  • 300+ threaded mounting points (incl. 32x 3/8″-16 w/Arri spacing)
  • 2x built-in Nato rails for mounting side handles
  • 1x built-in Rosette mount
  • 3x built-in cold shoe mounts
  • 2x Universal Adapter Lock mounting location*
  • 1x Adapter Specific Lock mounting location*
  • LCD Screen Cover/Hood mount options*
  • Direct-to-Cage 15mm Rod mount options*
  • Backplate mounting options*

*Basic purchase includes cage and mounting hardware only–other accessories pictured are optional add-ons.

Is it overkill?

For those thinking that a 670g (23.6oz) chunk of aluminum is a little much, XLCS also offers a lighter 600g (21.3oz) version dubbed the Hollow Point. Bonus points to those of you who noted both names are borrowed from ammunition terminology.

XLCS Hollow Point Cage for Blackmagic Design Pyxis 6K
XLCS Hollow Point Cage for Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K. Images: XLCS Designs.

While the Hollow Point is lighter in weight, it still offers the same mounting possibilities as the Full Metal Jacket. According to XLCS’s website, the Hollow Point offers 300+ threaded mounting points (incl. 32x 3/8″-16 w/Arri spacing), 2x built-in NATO rails for mounting side handles, 1x built-in Rosette mount, 3x built-in cold shoe mounts, 1x Universal Adapter Lock mounting location, LCD Screen Cover/Hood mount options, Direct-to-Cage 15mm Rod mount options and Backplate mounting options – exactly the same numbers offered by the bigger brother. Really, the only difference is the face plate that serves to protect your camera and lens, as well as offer additional mounting points for accessories.

The added benefit to the Hollow Point is that it can be used by any BMD PYXIS 6K, regardless of which mount you may have. The PYXIS comes in L/EF/PL Mount options, so you can choose this cage to hold any of those cameras, as the lens mounts are not interchangeable.

Price and availability

Both cages are available for pre-order at the price of $349.99 and are expected to ship on November 1st. You can find all the information you need on the XLCS Designs website.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on these XLCS cages. Do you like one over the other? Would you want one if you own a PYXIS? Why or why not? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

All cages are made of aluminum, feature three locking points to secure the camera firmly, have a built-in Arca-Swiss quick-release plate at the bottom, and have plenty of 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 mounting points. So, let’s take a closer look at these!

With impressive recording capabilities such as 6K60P N-RAW internal recording without any crop of the full-frame sensor, ProRes RAW HQ and ProRes 422 HQ internal recording at up to 6K30P, and 4K120P recording capabilities, there is little doubt that the Nikon Z 6III will be a popular mirrorless camera amongst filmmakers. After the camera’s release, SmallRig is one of the first third-party camera accessories manufacturers to release dedicated camera cages and accessories for it.

SmallRig Cage for the Leica SL3 Launched https://www.cined.com/smallrig-cage-for-the-leica-sl3-launched/ https://www.cined.com/smallrig-cage-for-the-leica-sl3-launched/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2024 17:09:59 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=330136 SmallRig is one of the first third-party camera accessories manufacturers to launch a cage for the Leica SL3. This full cage attaches securely to your camera via three mounting points: multiple 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 mounting points, a built-in ARCA Swiss quick-release plate, and a removable cable clamp. So, let’s take a closer look at it!

On the heels of the Leica SL3 release last week, SmallRig has already launched their tailor-made cage kit for the impressive mirrorless camera. Indeed, the Leica SL3 seems to be a promising camera for content creators and filmmakers thanks to its new 60MP Full-Frame BSI CMOS image sensor, a tilting touchscreen and OLED EVF, 5-axis IBIS, and the ability to capture 8K footage internally at 30 frames per second, or ProRes 422HQ footage in 1080p60. Also, the SL3 has many user-customizable buttons and dials, which makes it an interesting camera. However, like most modern mirrorless cameras, there is a need for a camera cage to make the SL3 a proper creation tool and to be able to attach a monitor, microphone, and other camera accessories to it.

But of course, there’s no such thing as the one perfect cage that fits all, so you’ll need to look closely at these (and other) options to find the perfect solution for your needs.

Tilta Camera Cage for X-H2 & X-H2S

This Tilta camera cage for the latest FUJIFILM X-H2 and X-H2S cameras (they share the same body design) features a full cage design that naturally protects your valuable camera. It also features numerous 1/4″-20 mounting points (with and without locating pins), a cold shoe, an M3 mounting point, and even an ARRI Rosette mount on the side.

The cage provides free access to the battery compartment on the bottom of the camera, it includes a screwdriver, which is very handy indeed, and the bottom plate also serves as an Arca Swiss compatible baseplate. This allows you to mount the camera directly on a DJI Ronin gimbal, for example, without the need for adapter plates.

To hold the host camera securely, the cage is attached with not one but two screws. This prevents the camera from coming loose in the cage. Lastly, the cage offers two Nato rails for attaching additional gear to your setup.

Tilta Camera Cage Basic Kit

If you have just bought a FUJIFILM X-H2 camera and really need all the accessories, you might want to consider not only the camera cage itself but the so-called Basic Kit: It consists of the above-mentioned Tilta camera cage plus a handle, a Manfrotto-style quick-release plate and a lens adapter mount.

Of course, that’s not the end of the journey, as Tilta offers a whole ecosystem for its mounting solutions. You can add additional Nato rails, 15mm rod holders, side handles, etc. to your setup as you see fit.

FALCAM Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6 Introduced https://www.cined.com/falcam-camera-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh6-introduced/ https://www.cined.com/falcam-camera-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh6-introduced/#comments Thu, 18 Aug 2022 13:36:28 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=251672 Chinese company FALCAM has recently released yet another camera cage for the Panasonic LUMIX GH6. It features an aluminum construction (198g) and offers 1/4”-20 mounting points, two extra cold shoe mounts, and F22/F38 quick-release interfaces. It is available now for $89.90.

Panasonic’s flagship Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera – the LUMIX GH6 (review/Lab Test/Q&A with Panasonic) – has been receiving a lot of attention lately. The camera just got cuddled by Panasonic with firmware update v2.0 (all about it here) and many third-party manufacturers have been developing accessories to improve its operability.

Here at CineD, we covered pretty much every rigging solution currently available on the market, including products from SmallRig, Zacuto8SinnTiltaSHAPE, and Kondor Blue. Now, Chinese manufacturer FALCAM – a sub-brand of Shenzhen Ulanzi Technology Co. – joins the list with a simple, budget-friendly option. Let’s take a closer look.

FALCAM cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6: features

With a weight of only 198g, the new FALCAM cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6 is one of the lightest options in its class. The cage is made of aluminum parts and features a sandblasted anodized surface treatment, which results in a sleek gray finish.

From what I can see, it attaches to the camera via a single 1/4”-20 screw at the bottom. This basically results in a single point of contact with the camera. Hence, I hope the anti-skid pads and anti-deflection pin actually help prevent the GH6 from accidentally rotating inside the cage.

The accessory seems to nicely wrap around the body, leaving all buttons and card/battery bays easily accessible, while several 1/4”-20 threads populate its surface. However, it seems like there are no 3/8”-16 holes, which is a major shortcoming, in my opinion. The camera’s native cold shoe mount remains free to use, while the cage provides additional top and left-side cold shoe interfaces.

Finally, since this product is part of the company’s proprietary quick-release ecosystem, it features built-in F22 (top and left side) and F38 (bottom) QR interfaces. The former makes it compatible with existing FALCAM F22 accessories – including a Side Hand Grip, Dual Quick Release Pan Head, Quick Release Top Handle, and Dual Quick Release Magic Arm – while the latter allows users to quickly move between handheld, gimbal, and tripod setups.

Price and availability

Overall, despite the new FALCAM Camera Cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6 doesn’t shine for its features, it can still be a good option for users looking to build an extremely lightweight camera setup.

The cage is now available for purchase from the company’s website. Its official retail price is $89.90, but the company is currently offering a 10% discount.

Kondor Blue Cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6 Released https://www.cined.com/kondor-blue-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh6-released/ https://www.cined.com/kondor-blue-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh6-released/#comments Thu, 11 Aug 2022 10:38:10 +0000 https://www.cined.com/?p=250960 Kondor Blue has recently released their own camera cage for the Panasonic LUMIX GH6. It features several 1/4”-20 and 3/8”-16 mounting points, an integrated Arca-Swiss plate, built-in tools, and even bubble levels. Pricing starts at $150.

Released at the beginning of this year, the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 is the company’s flagship model in their Micro Four Thirds lineup. The camera recently gained the ability to externally record 12-bit ProRes RAW with the Atomos Ninja V/V+ via a major firmware update (v2.0). If you’re interested in learning more about the camera, make sure to check out our review, Lab Test, and interview with Panasonic.

Soon after its release, third-party manufacturers started developing rigging accessories for the camera. Kondor Blue now joined this list, which already includes companies such as SmallRig, Zacuto, 8Sinn, Tilta, and SHAPE. Let’s take a closer look.

Kondor Blue cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6: features

The new Kondor Blue cage for Panasonic LUMIX GH6 fully wraps around the camera. It seems to provide enough protection to the body, while leaving all the main buttons and controls easily accessible. It only adds 400g/14oz. to the camera build and securely attaches to the GH6 via multiple points of contact, equipped with thumbscrews that don’t require tools to be tightened.

The cage offers several industry-standard mounting points for camera accessories, including top and side NATO rails as well as many 1/4”-20,  3/8”-16, and M4 threaded holes. The larger threads feature ARRI-style locating pins to prevent accidental rotation of the mounted accessories. Furthermore, since the accessory covers the camera’s native cold shoe mount, the top of the cage provides an additional one with a spring-loaded safety pin.

An Arca-Swiss quick-release plate at the bottom allows to rapidly move from handheld to gimbal setups, while HDMI and USB-C cables can be safely secured using a dedicated clamp. Interestingly, the design integrates bubble levels that can come in handy to check your camera’s horizon at one glance.

Overall, the Kondor Blue cage seems like a pretty convenient and complete rigging option for GH6 users. All the tools you need are magnetically attached to the baseplate, so you don’t need to carry extra hardware with you.

Top handle bundle

Along with a cage-only option, the company offers a bundle that includes a NATO-style top handle. This additional accessory offers five extra 3/8”-16 holes with locating pins, almost twenty 1/4”-20 threads, two cold shoe mounts, and a 15mm side rode support for mounting EVFs or monitors. Moreover, it features a start/stop record button, which supports Panasonic Protocols.
